Who we are

T
he Zen Center on Main Street  www.zenonmain.org is a community of practitioners dedicated to whole-hearted practice of the Way in the midst of our everyday lives.  We engage in traditional Soto Zen practice forms and  modern methods of healing and awakening our bodies, hearts and minds.  Our sacred space is located in the vital town center of Northampton, Massachusetts, overlooking Main Street.  This location is a reminder that spiritual practice and realization are our everyday lives.

Our intimate center is supported by a dedicated Sangha and led by two fully authorized Zen Teachers. The Teachers (Sensei) come from two different streams of Zen, that of the White Plum Lineage of Maezumi Roshi and the Soto Zen Lineage of Suzuki Roshi.

Our schedule includes weekly meditations, all day retreats, Zen rituals,  Beginners Mind Week, Face to Face Interview (Daisan), workshops, study groups and various other Sangha events.   Zen on Main welcomes all people and offers meditation instruction in Spanish, German, Polish, French and English upon request.

Come to sit for an hour, a day or for the rest of your life.

Beginnings

T
he Zen Center on Main Street began organically with a few dedicated zen students gathering together to meditate on Wednesday evenings at The Life Center for Network Chiropractic. As a stroke of good fortune, the office suite next door became available, and after much demolition and renovation work the sangha moved in and began a regular schedule of sittings.  The Zen Center on Main Street, affectionately known as Zen on Main is affiliated with the Village Zendo in New York City www.villagezendo.org

Abbot

R
oshi Enkyo O'Hara, of the Village Zendo in New York City, is the Abbot of the Zen Center on Main Street. A Zen Priest and certified Zen Teacher in the Soto Tradition, Roshi studied with John Daido Loori Roshi of Zen Mountain Monastery and Taizan Maezumi Roshi of the Zen Center of Los Angeles. In 1997, she received Dharma Transmission from Roshi Bernie Tetsugen Glassman and in June 2004, the title 'Roshi'.

Roshi Enkyo O'Hara holds a Ph.D. in Media Ecology and she taught Multimedia at New York University for over 20 years.
